Confused about cloud computing? You’re not alone! Most of us talk about the cloud without really knowing what we mean. Let’s talk about cloud computing and how it can benefit your business.

What is the cloud?

Once reserved to IT circles, cloud computing is now on every business and social agenda. The cloud is where you put all of your data (including business applications) so you can access it from any computer or device, anywhere, anytime via the internet.

See the difference the cloud can make in your day to day lives.

  • Mobility – Working remotely has never been easier. Mobile workers can operate worldwide without an IT department or support. The cloud is even decreasing the need for traditional offices!
  • Globalisation – The world is your oyster. The world has been getting smaller and more accessible with the rise in cloud-based communication applications and social media.
  • Banking – With internet and mobile banking, your financial data is available online anytime, anywhere and on any device.
  • Shopping – In an age of information overload, companies are less interested in the immediate sale than in providing advice. Businesses want to become your trusted adviser and can offer suggestions based on your online activity.
  • MaxiCloud – MaxiCloud is based on the same approach. The cloud makes Maximo affordable and accessible for businesses with 5 users to 5,000 users. And you can get set up in no time, giving you a huge advantage over your slower competitors.

5 common cloud myths

The cloud isn’t all silver linings. We’re tackling the hard questions about cloud computing so you can be prepared before moving your business to the cloud.

  1. Isn’t the cloud the same as the internet?
No – the cloud is the ‘what’ and the internet is the ‘how’. The cloud is where your data lives and the internet is the connection.
  2. What about security?
Your data is actually much safer in the cloud. Data Centres invest heavily in systems and experts to protect your data.
  3. What if the internet goes down?
It’s very rare for today’s broadband connection to go down and if it does it will be back shortly. In the meantime, all your data is safe in the cloud.
  4. Isn’t the cloud expensive?
The cloud is much cheaper because you only pay for what you use. You’re not paying for software upgrades, system maintenance, support fees or expensive hardware.
  5. Will I lose control of my data?
The cloud doesn’t mean you are giving your data to someone to never see again. The cloud can be used and deployed in countless ways and customised to meet your business needs, including the level of control you need.

Cloud and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

The differences between cloud and SaaS can be confusing. Cloud is an umbrella term and any SaaS solution also sits in the cloud, so we need to be able to distinguish between the two.

You can run Maximo in the cloud (BPD offers this service). This means you can move your Maximo deployment into a Data Centre and pass over responsibility for running, maintaining and patching the hardware and software. However, you still own the application and decide when its upgraded.

This is separate from SaaS products like MaxiCloud. With SaaS, you pay on a subscription basis (per user/per month) effectively renting the use of Maximo. You still use Maximo in the normal way but the hardware and software is controlled and managed by BPD including upgrades and maintenance. This is the “service” element of the offering and along with the subscription pricing model is what makes it SaaS.

True SaaS goes a step further with multi-tenancy support. This is where multiple independent Maximo instances operate in a shared environment. Multi-tenancy is an efficient way of providing new functionality as new versions of Maximo are deployed, sharing best practice across customers, and passing on economies of scale.
